Publicis Groupe, a global advertising and public relations company, commissioned Clive Wilkinson Architects to design their new North America headquarters in New York City. Adjacent to Times Square, the 190,000 SF space spans eight contiguous floors, providing an opportunity to unite their three expanding offices scattered across Manhattan. In an effort to express a strong creative identity for Publicis, we proposed breaking the traditional mold of the skyscraper by dematerializing the building core. This works to create continuity on all floors, connecting their 1200 employees as one organic working community. This desire for an “open concept” environment originated with CEO Andrew Bruce, who wanted a new work space that would accommodate a variety of events including large client pitches, internal lectures, and all hands presentations. “Most of all, the space allows us to adapt,” Bruce observes. “I don’t know how we’ll be shaped in five years, but I do know we’ve built an office that will accommodate it.”

Located in vibrant downtown Austin, the rapidly growing office of the Gerson Lehrman Group was in need of additional space to expand. Clive Wilkinson Architects was commissioned to design a new workplace for the successful professional learning platform. Nearly doubling their footprint, the recently completed space accommodates 450 employees across two contiguous floors. Following the completion of their Global Headquarters in New York City, the 42,000 SF Austin office is the second GLG facility CWA has designed. The Austin office takes on a distinct local identity while also retaining brand characteristics established in its award-winning predecessor. The end result? “A unique, energy-fueled place that not only enhances the GLG brand but fosters collaboration, innovation, and, most of all, employee happiness.”

We are thrilled to announce that the Microsoft Canada Excellence Centre in Vancouver, BC has been shortlisted by the judges in the Best Interior Project (Work) category at this year’s Blueprint Awards.

An expanding workforce caused the world-renowned tech giant to reposition and expand their Vancouver offices into a newly renovated structure in the heart of downtown Vancouver. This new office houses two gaming companies and a software developer business unit, but was designed for future adaptability as their business model transforms. Our design team drew upon the distinct forested natural setting of Canada’s Lower Mainland to inform the architecture. The airy, branch-like ceiling structures and the more grounded, boulder-like enclosures are references to the canopies and roots of the local native tree species.

Our current project for the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago has been published in the Chicago Tribune with the good news of a major bequest from its new benefactors, Pat and Shirley Ryan. The new facility, to be named the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, is the vision of CEO Dr. Joanne Smith and aims to bring together scientists, researchers, physicians and clinical therapists in open laboratory spaces. This concept encourages deeper knowledge sharing between traditionally segregated disciplines, and shall drive innovation in translational research, medical product development and clinical care.

Clive Wilkinson Architects worked with the project team to shape the patient user experience throughout the hospital. We designed the five separate ability labs to address different functions and assists patients with very different challenges. They all have a unique story and a unique communication to their users. The challenge was to identify and elaborate those stories, and from there to extrapolate into the physical sphere. Ideas capable of supporting a culture of hope, optimism and achievement were prioritized.
