The Santa Monica College Media Technology Campus is an expansion of the existing Academy of Entertainment Technology (AET) campus that will accommodate a 430 vehicle parking garage, site improvements that include a café and central courtyard as well as new homes for the college Communication and Design Technology departments and KCRW radio station.

Via numerous client discussions, Clive Wilkinson Architects discovered that the various media programs shared the common theme of ‘storytelling’ and began thinking of the new campus within a narrative for the progressive sequence of learning. The fully renovated AET, replete with classrooms, student lounges and faculty offices, will operate as an arrival point for new media students and as an incubator of new ideas. The New Media Technology addition, housing production facilities and editing suites, will continue the story with an emphasis on experimentation and discovery. Finally, the new KCRW building will act as the endpoint for the narrative sequence, where ideas have matured and find their places in a real-world application. Connecting these experiences is the creative arena of the central courtyard where a café, supportive landscaping and event infrastructure will enable all programs to publicly converge into a single creative community.
